How to Find an Emergency Dentist As Soon As Possible
July 14, 2022
Taking proper precautions is the best way to avoid dental emergencies. However, sometimes that isn’t always possible. Most people will experience at least one in their lifetime. In times like these, it’s best to have an emergency dentist you can call. However, what if you don’t have a dentist to call in the worst-case scenario? Consider these tips on how to find an emergency dentist as quickly as possible and get your emergency resolved!
When Your Issue is Concerning, but Not Urgent
In the event you have a dental issue you want treated soon but still have time to choose one nearby, it can be helpful to spend some time researching. A relatively simple way to do this is to review a practice’s website to determine if they can best meet your needs. For example, do they:
- Offer same-day emergency visits?
- Mention how long their average response time is?
- Have doctor bios that mention an expertise in treating dental emergencies or performing restorative dentistry?
You’ll have a better idea if this is the right place to visit by confirming these details ahead of time.
When You Need an Emergency Dentist Now
While visiting a dentist that’s close by is more ideal, you’ll need to keep in mind that they may not be able to help you if you call them outside of their regular business hours. Always give the dental office you find a call ahead of time to confirm they can either get you seen or at the very least schedule you for an appointment the next day.
However, if you learn the office is not currently open, be sure to listen to their voicemail. Some offices will have a separate number specifically for addressing dental emergencies. If they do, call that number. If you’re still getting a voicemail, leave a message describing your symptoms.
If at any time you believe your life is at risk or you cannot handle your dental discomfort any longer, go to the emergency room. At the very least, you may be able to get pain relief before heading to a dental office.
Manage Your Emergency in the Meantime
Dental emergencies come in many different forms, some of which are less severe than others. If you have to manage your symptoms for now, do your best to stay calm. Take time to assess the situation so you know the best way to move forward. For example, tooth pain can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen and a cold compress. A knocked-out tooth can be picked up (do this by the crown portion only), cleaned, and re-inserted temporarily into the socket.
Regardless of the type of emergency you have, calling an emergency dental office is one of the most important steps you can take.
